Missing Admin PW

Al Morrison

We are trying to log on to a server with 200 Server
installed. The prior Administrator has vanished and we
have tried multiple attempts at logging in to no avail.
Is there any way to bypass the startup login with out
doing a re-install?

Thanks

Al,

There is a program out there that lets you boot from a floppy and reset
the administrator password to nothing. Try:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

I think this is the one that I used. I think it's pretty cool.

If this is a domain controller, there may be some additional or alternative
methods for doing this. It's found at that website as well. There's a link
to someone else's faq about how to handle this with domain controllers. If
it's not a domain controller, the simple download will work.

*** IMPORTANT ***

Make sure that you change the password once you log in so that it does not
remain blank. That is very dangerous. You also might want to disconnect
that computer from the network before doing this, so that no computer on the
internet, or computer on your intranet that is compromised, can log in with
a blank administrator password.

After changing the password, you can reconnect the computer.
