miss the bell: reminder symbol display on calendar

G

Guest

Anyway to get the little bell symbol or whatever to indicate that the
appointment has a reminder set? I would like to be able to see what
appointments have reminders and what don't at a glance instead of having to
open up the appointment.

Thanks, Diane. That's too bad. Since you listed out the views it does NOT
display in, are there some views it does show in?

D

Diane Poremsky

You can add the view to any table view.

I thought 2007 was supposed to be "improved." It seems that features that
were available in 2003 are now no longer available. As I keep track of both
my boss's calendar and my own, it was a quick verification by having the
reminder symbol visible without opening each appointment. Any chance that
2007 could be updated to include the reminder symbol?

D

Diane Poremsky {MVP}

no it can't be updated and its unlikely they will add it in an update. They
removed it to clean up and streamline the view. Reminders can be enabled by
default and should be applied to all appointments when its enabled, making
the icon unnecessary in the month view. you can use a table view If you need
to look for items without reminders.

I really don't understand why they removed this feature! It should be at
least an option to keep it as it was for users that need it in their
workflow. All we need is a simple checkbox in the Options menu.

Just wondering -- did you have a focus group of people who actually spend
much of their time working on calendars before you decided to remove the
visible reminder? It's one of the first things I looked for when I began
working in 2007 last week. It was a really important and useful feature --
and I can't figure out why you simply took it away.

Well, I didn't take it away, but yes, Microsoft uses a lot of focus groups
in their study of how people work with computers. They also make heavy use
of usability labs and even send people around to offices to watch how real
people in the real world work. They are also aware people miss the bell - I
had the opportunity to speak with the product team recently and it was on
the list of user complaints we discussed.

I use the work week view and, after being changed to Outlook 2007 recently,
I find it bizarre that Microsoft has removed the reminder symbol in the
interests of cleaning up the display. Oh well, it sounds like I have to try a
table view. I have had a look at the All Appointments view, which isn't
really the kind of view I want, but in any event I can't see how to make the
items show if they have a reminder. Can someone help or point me to a
suitable help file or website.

Then I'd like to add my name to the list of frustrated users missing the
reminder bell icon.

D

Me too. I'd also like to add my name to the list of frustrated users missing
the
reminder bell icon. I know many others who feel the same way.

A

Adrian

Me three ;-) I support staff who monitor many calendars and, "Where has the
bell and faces (where others have been invited) gone ?" is becoming a common
question.

E

Erudite Luddite

Chalk up another bemused and frustrated "upgrader" from Office 2003 to 2007
who can't believe the bell has gone! Why, why, why??

S

Simon

Add me to the list of dissatisfied Outlook 2007 users. Bring back the bell!

As I posed on another thread, they kept the other icons - attachment,
re-occur and private - what's the deal with the bell?

S

straton

Wow! Another great example of Microsoft arrogance--assuming everyone uses an
application the same way they do, violating the first rule of software
design. Who are these bozos and why do we keep doing business with them?
This is the eigth reason on my list to roll back to Office 2003 and recommend
that others don't upgrade. Leaves me wondering whether Linux could possibly
be this painful.

I completely agree - this was one of the best time-saving devices,
particularly to ensure that intrusive alarms do not appear on my handheld at
inappropriate and unexpected times. Particularly important when other users
have access to entering appointments on my calendar. They may not have the
motivation (or inclination) to change the default reminder feature to 'None'.

D

DavidBendet

This is a trajic flaw, and I'm surprised there haven't been many more
complaints.
Our office (1500+ employess) just upgraded to Office 2007 and I've spoken to
more than a dozen people about this who agree that the reminder symbol needs
to be added back.
The problem is, I often assume I have a reminder, when I may not actually
have one set. I've missed a couple of appointments already as a result of
this.
I've also noticed the multiple attendees profile symbol is gone.
This is a step backwards.
