misbehaving pointer

How do i stop the pointer from selecting everything it rests on.
I'm using a Toshiba laptop with the slider thingy below the keyboard.
Most annoying.

ah yes the touch pad, well you have to be carefull when typing to not hit it
or rest of it by accident and also to be sensible with it just the lightest
touch will make it work it doesn't need a lot of pressure

Go to the Control Panel Mouse/touchpad applet and adjust your
touchpad/mouse sensitivity.
