minor bug with MSN Messenger

C

Chris

There is bug with MSN Messenger. When I receive an email
and which have checked "Display alerts when email
received", I click on that notification and it jumps me
right directory to my msn email account in a new window.
However, while I'm in reading my email I'll try to close
and exit MSN Messenger from the taskbar. Unfortunately, I
receive the following error:

There are other applications currently using features
provided by MSN Messenger. You must close these other
applications before you can exit MSN Messenger. These
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN,
MSN Explorer, Internet Explorer, and Three Degrees.

I'm not using these applications, and what the heck is
Three Degrees? I think MSN Messenger is pulling my leg. :)

Greetings Chris,

You can't close Messenger while Outlook Express, MSN Explorer (that includes MSN 8/9) or
Hotmail (in Internet Explorer) is open. How exactly are you reading this mail?

As for threedegrees, see here:
http://www.threedegrees.com/FAQs.aspx?lang=en-US

More specifically:
With 3[degrees] you can:
Throw a personalized animation on your friends' desktops with winks.
Listen to a shared play list simultaneously, created from music that you own.
Easily send digital photos from last night's party to your friends.
Initiate group chat with MSN Messenger.

I'm reading my email through Internet Explorer, not using
those other applications like Outlook, Outlook Express,
and MSN Explorer. It's when I'm still log into my email
account and then when I close MSN Messenger, I get that
error.

Hi Chris,

Yes, a number of sites (including Hotmail) when you're using Internet Explorer actually use
Messenger, so you can't close it. What you're seeing is "by design".

I still think there's a bug. On my XP home edition system Windows Messenger
refuses to close, even after I hang the modem off and close evey application
but the desktop and Windows Messenger.

Hi Robert,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause some of this
behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the
System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options,
then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
