Minor Annoyance with Desktop Icons

Problem: I have approximately 50 desktop icons on my desktop.
Whenever I boot, restart, and in some instances after I close
applications (varies, no consistency), all my desktop icons slowly
redraw. After a boot, it can take 1-2 minutes for all the icons to
redraw and reappear in their application-based colors before I can
proceed with productive applications. This drives me nuts.

Hardware/Software: Intel P4 (1.6 GHz CPU); 1 GB DDR RAM;
Nvida GEForce3 TI-200 display adapter; 80GB and 60 GB hard
drives (7200 RPM); ASUS P4B266C motherboard; Win XP
(Home) SP2; Symantec Internet Security 2005; IE6, OE6;
MS office 2003.

Any ideas?

It may be my imagination...

It seems to me a cleaner desktop loads faster. What about storing them somewhere else, especially the folders containing multiple gigs of stuff.
