Wait a minute. Now you've got me confused...

If you want to convert (i.e replace) XP with 2K then why do you need to
be able to boot XP afterwards?

If you want to triple boot 98 2K and XP then I'm afraid you will have to
install the applications for each OS. I know of no way to have the three
OSes share the apps. Share data files, yes, but not applications.

If you don't want to delete the boot files for XP then simply rename them.

Steve,

I do want a dual boot system that contains XP and 2k adn that is already set
up.

I've copied XP to a third test drive so, in essence, I can boot into either
identical copy of XP. I will convert the second to 2K.

There will not be app sharing. The XP drive will be kept as is for a
backup.

The point I was making in the last post was that the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM
are not the files that tells the the installer the version of the Windows
application.

Thanks for that clarification.

Ok then, we need to figure out what on the HDD tells setup.exe on the 2k
cd what version of Windows is on the HDD.

Some one here ought to know. I don't, but now I want to know. Knowing XP
it's likely buried fifteen directory levels deep. Or worse, a registry
key halfway to China. hopefully it's just some itty-bitty file, just
gotta find it and I bet the in-place "upgrade" idea will work.

:)

Come on folks. What is it?
