Migrating a new AD in Windows 2000 Server: Any Step by step instructions?

Hello,
I am attempting to migrate an AD server from one win2k box to another
win2k box. I want to make an exact copy of the previous AD server. Is
it simply creating a new AD, copy over the user accounts from the old
AD and then switch the IP of the new box to the old box's ip? Or there
is more to it in the process? Thanks!

Paul,
Have a look at this. It's instructions on how to achieve what you want:

Thanks for the tip!

Now I have a new problem. Here's my setup.

It is a small office setup where the old domain controller IP is on a
seperate DNS server, where I have the following settings.

Domain = PRISM
Domain name = cheopa.homeunix.com

I'm attempting to replace a WIN2k DC to a new Win2k DC.

I've followed your document and I've successfully made the new server
join the domain. When I run dcpromo I get this error message.

"Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain
cheopa.homeunix.com"

My question is that should I point my new server's DNS setting to the
old DC controller? Or there a way I can get the DNS server to see the
domain name?

Second, when I run dcpromo, do I use the "Additional domain controller
for an existing domain" option?

Thanks for all your help and sorry for my lack of Windows server
knowledge :).

In this case, as your DNS is not on the DC but is on the UNIX box, you need
to point to the UNIX box for DNS.

Yes, this is the correct option. You want to add an existing DC, so that
you can replicate the other and then remove the other.

No problem!!

Domain = PRISM. Domain name = cheopa.homeunix.com

Interesting. Is your Active Directory Domain Name different to the DNS
name? If so, this might help:
