AD Migration

Hi all,

I wonder if someone clarifies the following please.

In our organisation we have Windows 2000 Active Directory and the server is
few years old and crashing all the time. We asked our IT consultant to
migrate it into Windows 2003.

His response was that the current server is based on Windows 2000 Advanced
edition and in order to migrate we would need to buy Windows Enterprise
Edition.

I looked in my computer icon, properties, general tab and it is only showing
Windows 2000 server not Advanced as he said.

1 - How do I find out the exact OS installed?
2 - Do I need to buy Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition in order to move the AD
into a new server?

Your comments are very much appreciated.

Thanks

1 - How do I find out the exact OS installed?

Look at what it says on the login screen. Or right click on my computer and
select properties. What does it say on the general tab?

AD
into a new server?

If you have Windows 2000 Server you can upgrade it with Win 2k3 Standard or
Enterprise.
If you have Windows 2000 Advanced server then you have to upgrade using Win
2k3 Enterprise.
If you have Windows 2000 Advanced server I don't see why you can't "migrate"
to Win 2k3 Standard.

Thanks for your response. I had a look and it is Windows 2000 and we not
upgrading the server as it is 5 years old and not worth. We already have a
spare 2003 ST and we thought we might utilise it better by moving AD into it.
Would be better off building a clean 2000 and move AD first and then move it
into 2003?

Thanks

If by "building a clean 2000" you mean building a new domain and adding your
users to the new domain, I would just build a new Win 2k3 domain and be done
with it.
