Microtek i320 problems

D

David L. Markowitz

I just got a brand new i320, and am trying to get everything working.
I have run into two problems.

The first and most important is that reflective scans aren't
preserving aspect ratio. Everything is set up for a straight-
forward scan (I've tried several resolutions, such as 300dpi),
but the results are stretched horizontally, making people appear
fat. I can correct this in photoshop of course, but I should be
getting square pixels out of the scanner.

The second is that the "copy" button (scan to printer) results in
a printout of the top corner, perhaps a couple inches, blown up
on a letter-sized page. My printer is a Postscript printer if that
matters.

Anyone have any experience with this new scanner?

You said reflective.. film doesnt? (probably only my hasty false
assumption about what you said).

I have not seen that scanner, but I do have ScanWizard 5 on another
model. The stretched image is indeed puzzling, I've never seen that,
and it doesnt even seem possible in ScanWizard, so it must be something
weird. I dont know of any ScanWizard setting to make that be possible
if you wanted it. I would suggest phoning Microtek support about it.

But first, I did wonder (trying to understand), if you scanned say a
specific 4x4 inch area at say 100 dpi, then the ScanWizard Settings
Window should show expected output of 400x400 pixels (in pixel mode). I
expect it does say that, but then what dimensions exactly do you in fact
get in that case? What does Photoshop Image Size say it is? Anything
unusual there (PS Image Size)? If the output image is in fact the
400x400 pixels at 100 dpi, then it must be some type of viewing
situation. Hard to guess without any details.

I think this next is a wild goose chase, but is a file output? (as
opposed to twain directly to photoshop). If so, what file type, and have
you tried a different file type? If not, you might try a file to see
what happens (by starting ScanWizard standalone instead of from
Photoshop).

I was just wanting to know more where this very strange thing might be
happening, which would be a good clue. Viewing the same results via 2
or 3 different methods might shed some light on it. "This works, that
doesnt, then it must mean this...". One never knows until one tries.

As to the printed image size, two possibilities... If the ScanWizard
Settings window Scale field does not say 100% ... if it says perhaps
500%, then that is instruction to print an 8x10 page to be 5x or 40x50
inches, which will be difficult on a letter size printer. <g> I'd guess
this must be it, at least it is the obvious first thing to check... it
is a real setting that could do that. This exact final scaled (large)
output size will be be shown in the Settings Window (Output, if showing
inches then). What actual printed size does it say to expect there?

Or 2), printers often have a similar scaling field in their driver
properties which can do the same thing if not set to 100% - however I
think you would see that when printing from other programs too.

Scan bar will not cover entire bed.

I ordered an i320 from BestBuy.Com and hooked it up to my Grandma's computer and just over half way down the bed the scanning bar stops and returns weird colored lines back to the PC as the image. I returned this one to BB but they were sold out on new ones so I got one directly from Microtek. The new one I received seemed to work OK when I first set it up, but the next time she tried to use it (1 month later) it did the EXACT SAME THING only this time about 2" from the end of the bed. I tried it on my laptop to make sure it wasn't a problem with her computer, and it did the same thing. I also tried downloading new drivers, no good. Does anyone know a solution?
THANKS,
Drew
