I was trying to open a file which was saved as a word
format but i don't have word on my computer. I have
windows XP home edition and i would like to know how and
what i need to know to open this file.

I don't think that's very helpful Norm. WordPad is installed when you
install Word itself. Its not part of Windows.

Dwight should go to Downloads at the Microsoft website and do a search for
"Word Viewer". There are Word Viewers to read Word 97 and 2000 documents.
I'd post the direct link to the download site but it's about a kilometre
long.

Well, word itself, for the obvious answer. There's also OpenOffice
(download, free,) and there may be a word document viewer on MS's site.

Mike, this is not true. Norms's advice was spot on as it enables the
original poster to probably read the file with what he has without
having to install yet more software.

Wordpad is part of Windows XP. Since version 1.0 as I recall. Wordpad
will open most DOC files (although I'm sure about the Word XP and Word
2003).

This will also work ... but for many people it is not necessary.

virus infection is essentially zero. (Making wordpad a lot safer than Word).

Downloading and installing the Word Viewer will also work ... but for
many people it is not necessary. Wordpad should at least be tried as a
first step.

Sorry, that's not correct. Wordpad *is* a part of Windows, and
not of Word.

Wrong. Start-Programs-Accessories - Wordpad. It is NOT part of Word, it IS
part of Windows. Has been since Win95, when it replaced Write.

Greetings --

Wrong. Both NotePad and WordPad have been included as part of
Windows since Win95.
