Microsoft Word 'Search' function won't work

Since installing the Microsoft compatibility pack (to allow Vista Office
documents to be read) the Search facility in Word fails to find any texts.
Even copying and pasting a word from the document into the search pane fails
to work.

I'm running Office 2003 (11.8227.8221) SP3 on a Dell Precision T7400 running
Win XP Pro SP3.

Can anyone shed light on a cure for the failing Search function?

There are no 'Vista' office documents. Word 2007 'documents' are not
documents but zip files containing XLM files. The Office search tool
predates Word 2007 and cannot read this format.

The search tool should still work with Word 97-2003 format.
