If this is Word 2002 or 2003, you may not have activated the software; see
Help | Activate Product.

If this happens only in one document, try Tools - Unprotect Document.
If all your new and existing documents are locked the problem is that hyou
have not activated your
Word software. Maybe you are using a trial version that has expired.
Try Help - Activate Product. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog
box will appear prompting you to enter a product key or purchase one online.
