Microsoft Word documents have become Protected

Suddenly Word 2002 has become protected totally. Cannot change old documents
or write new documents. When attempting to type or delete a message comes up
that it is "locked for editing". The option to "protect or unprotect" is
grayed out.
This was caused by hitting some kind of key combination.
 
What happens if you start Word and click on Help | Activate Product?
