I cannot get the protection feature to work in Word 2002

I have a template in Word 2002. I unprotected it to make a few changes.
When I go to protect it again, "Protect Document" is grayed out in the
"Tools" menu. The little lock icon on the forms menu is also grayed out.
Why can't I protect the document again?

Click in some text on the document and try again. Chances are that you are
focused in a non-text object.

Hello -

I have the same problem - and clicking elsewhere in the document doesn't work.

I saved it as a .dot - and it won't let me "protect" to activate the forms
fields.

Thanks!

Have either of you used the Controls toolbar? It sounds like you're in
Design Mode. Turn the Controls toolbar on (or you may have a small Exit
Design Mode toolbar displayed if you turned the Controls bar Off while in
Design Mode) & look at the button with the pencil/triangle/ruler icon - if
it's On, click it - you must exit from Design Mode before you can apply
Protection in any way.

I'm having this porblem as well, but I've upgraded from 2003 to Office 2007.
How do I fix this problem here?

Thank you

You control design mode in 2007 using the set square icon in the Controls
Group on the Developer tab on the Ribbon. If you don't see the Developer
tab, click on the Office Button and then the Word Options button at the
bottom of the dropdown menu and check the box for "Show developer tab in the
Ribbon"

Similar problem. All 4 options on the Tools/Protection screen are greyed.
Formatting Restrictions. Editing Restriction. Enforcement. Permissions.
Confirmed not in Design Mode. Cursor is on text not graphic. Would be glad to
attach the file to anyone who wants to investigate.

Thank you. So much. This worked like a charm.
