microsoft word crashing!!

J

jarayak

I am using a trial version of Microsoft Office which I'm sure is valid until
at least the end of September. I have been doing updates, as it recommends.
And now I am having great difficulty with my Microsoft Office Word, every
time I open the application it crashes within 60 seconds. It has only just
started happening in the last 48 hours. I have read through numerous forums
and attempted to change normal.docx to something else but cant find it. I've
made sure that I have printer drivers and have also checked add ins with none
of these seeming to be the cause of the issue. PLEASE help me.

My microsoft word is not crashing as soon as it is opened but once i've begun
typing, also didn't crash when I was in word options but only once I had
closed it. I have found the normal.dotm file and it wasnt hidden I just did
not know where to look, the file was just named 'normal' so I added .bad at
the end of it and then opened word again- where it "stopped working" after
approx 25 seconds. I have also gone through the other steps on the link that
you sent me for the page you made with no luck- even after restarting. And
the other link that you advised me to go to the MVP website- none of those
errors seem to describe what is happening to my Office. Do you think because
I am still using a trial version that this could be causing the application
to crash?

The trial version is no different from the retail version - it is merely
time limited.
The point of the two web pages was to address the user file problems that
cause Word to crash. The fact that it doesn't do so immediately is
irrelevant. You need to address all the matters referred to to isolate the
issue that is causing Word to crash. Then each time it crashes eliminate the
orphaned temporary files referred to in the first of the linked pages.

In order to see "normal.dotm" instead of "normal", you need to turn on
"show file extensions" somewhere within your Windows customizations.
Which version of Windows do you have?

If you modified Normal to Normal.bad you have just modified Normal.dotm to
Normal.bad.dotm, which will likely not make much difference.

Normal.bad.dotm is a valid filename - and it is not normal.dotm so Word
should not see it as such.

I guess you're right. I guess it's only in the Startup folder that changing
filenames so that they still end in .dot or .dotm is pointless (because Word
will still load them).
