Hello,
We have letterhead saved in Word format that is a read only document. When
we open up and edit, and save as a different name, and then go to email it,
the letterehead portion of the document disappears. Why? Thank you for
your help.

Are you emailing as an attachment or as the body of the email? If the
latter, then headers and footers cannot be included.

HTML e-mail does not support headers, footers or even pages.
You would also be better advised to save the letter as a template with the
fixed text in place and create new documents from it.
