I have a slow laptop that is running windowns xp professional 64 ram so it
is slow...prepared for that but it downloads programs via windows update
automatically just not service pack II which I need to install another
program.

The other problem is that although the updates are downloaded the computer
does not tell me they are there for a while- is there any way to force the
computer to find the updates?

Does windows update stop after several updates are downloaded? It should
download service pack II but it is downloading other updates instead....

Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

Windows Service Pack 2 is a very large update. I don't know how long you
stay onlice when you start up your computer, but you should allow for this.
Since you only have 64MB of RAM that may be a factor also. How large is your
hard drive and how much space you have left might also be a factor. If you
don't have enough room, Update will not download the service pack. In this
case, go to the Microsoft site and request that they send the CD to you for
SP2.

Once updates are downloaded. it sometimes takes a while for the system to
notify you. Sometimes that happens to me also. When it does, I open my
browser to the Windows Update site and have it scan for updates -- this
jumpstarts the update process and give me the notification that updates are
already present and ready for installation. Close the browser and proceed
with the updates.

You might consider getting more RAM though.

I checked to see that ram is sufficient I will check the size but I am
confident that there is enough room cant remember so wil re check.

I have the chips in the mail but thought I would update first. It will take
longer.

I am finding that the windows update site does not work for me- auto update
seems to bringing some updates down but when I go to the windows update I go
through the verification page and then it sits looking for updates
forever....another ram problem no doubt but it should work eventually but is
not.

That would show a list of updates available.....

I have cleared the cache out for explorer.....and made sure explorer is set
properly.

I have let it sit over night.

<snip>

before you do anything...
you should bump the RAM up to 256 megs...
even for win2k, 64 megs is low...

and by all means...go into the control panel
(system. advanced. performance)
and adjust for best performance
