When trying to load SP1 to an XP pro system I am receiving
the following error Microsoft requires use of "Machine
Assigned" distribution method whne using update.msi.

That means that you can only use the MSI file through Group Policy Machine
Assigned Software Installations ... Simply run UPDATE.EXE to perform a
manual install of the Service Pack ...
