Microsoft Update updated VIA drivers to my Intel IDE chipsset - Total crash :-(

L

Lars-Erik Østerud

After installing the latest security fixes on my XP Pro at work I did
a new Update scan after booting to see if anything else showed up...

I then got an optional hardware update:

- VIA Storage - Primary IDE channel - June 2006

I installed it and booted. Now XP crashes half way into the loading
screen (not bluescreen, PC just plains hardboot each time). Same
happend when booting into safe mode. Only thing that saved me was
"Last known good configuration". Thank God for that!

Now: WHY THE ***** DOES UPDATE SUGGEST TO INSTALL VIA DRIVER ON
MY INTEL 82801BA IDE CONTROLLER!?!? If more people check
this update then many XP installations may get corrupted :-(

This is a serious problem, I think this update is showing up on every
machine, and killing most of them. It showed up on a bunch of my machines
that have SATA controllers on them. And also my Intel IDE controller.

I never rely on any hardware updates from Windows Updates. There
results you got are the ones I have experienced each and every time I
tried a hardware update. That is why they are "optional."

Brand new HP laptops that I am setting up found this update also. Both
crashout when the update is run and rebooted. Every system we have
(multiple configs and manufactures) pull the same update. Why would it
do this? A bug at the update server level?
Thanks

I had this problem as well. I used the "last know good configuration"
option and I booted up fine.

Sorry, I don't know why this happened, but several have posted about this
now. Check in the windows update newsgroup. Probably lots of posts about
this.

It's too late now, but never allow hardware driver updates from the windows
update site unless it is an MS manufactured hardware device.

I always image the system before doing any software updates, including
windows update.

I cannot boot my Gateway after installing the VIA patch... it cycles halfway
through the boot... I tried selecting the last time it was working with no
success... I even tried doing a repair of Windows with no luck... Anyone have
any ideas on how to recover from this disaster...

You should be able to press F8 and choose to boot with the last known
good profile.

NEVER accept an updated driver from the Windows update site.

Never.

I see this statement very often.
Never is a long time.
I use the updated device drivers from Windows update and have
never had a problem.
I do however use all Intel based boxes.

"Never" is good advice. It's far safer to get driver updates from the
hardware manufacturer.

That doesn't mean that every time you get a driver update from Microsoft,
you will have a problem. That's not even close to true. But it does mean
that the risk of having a problem by doing so is greater than if you get
them from the manufacturer.

Your saying "I use the updated device drivers from Windows update and have
never had a problem" is like saying "I always drive without putting on my
seatbelt, and I've never had a problem." Maybe so, but you've been lucky.
It's much safer to never get driver updates from Microsoft, just as it's
much safer to never drive without seatbelts.

I too use Intel only boxes but I still will "avoid" all Windows Update
driver updates. The problem is not with the drivers for any Intel
part. It's with the "other" drivers. You were "lucky" you did not
have to do a complete re-format and re-install your Windows yet. I
did a couple of times so I personally know that Windows Update driver
updates are, in most part, a PITA, espcially to "remove" the update.

Your experience is unique.

As do I.

I used what MS provided many years ago... and learned from the system
crashing that it was better to visit the mfr websites than to use
Windows Update.
