Microsoft update failure; post XP SP3

I have a brand new machine, installed XP Pro that included SP 2 and
immediately updated to SP 3. I then installed Office 2007, an antivirus
package and printer drivers and and then went back to Microsoft Update
expecting to install Office 2007 SP1, and any other needed update since SP 3.
Every time I try to update I get a failure message, with no real indicators
of what is wrong. The following fail to update:

Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906)
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11
(KB941569)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB946983)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB947801)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB946974)
Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB946691)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Visio 2007 (KB947590)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB950114)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB950378)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2007 (KB950113)
Security Update for Microsoft Office system 2007 (KB951808)

This machine has been running for two days now and I need to finish making
this machine available to my in-house end user. Any thoughts as to what to
try?

See if the information in this articles helps. While it refers to a repair
installation, recent posts in these newsgroups indicate that it may apply to
clean installations as well.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Good luck

I had exactly the same issue - again, not a repair but a clean install of
XP-SP2, followed by immediate update to SP3 (once I'd installed BitDefender
antivirus). I ran in SP3 without issue but then, when I went to Microsoft
Update to install other updates (e.g. Flash Security update, Media Player 11,
Internet Explorer 7.0) the updates would download but the install would fail
with no error code, and the updates did not appear in the history (as failed
or otherwise).

Delighted it's now working (I followed Method 1 on the link)

Same thing happens to me every time I apply SP3 to a virgin SP2 system.

Method 1 in:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

fixes the SP3 bug.

I finally wrote a batch script to apply that fix, as it happens to me so
often.

It blows my mind that something like this exists, as many years as SP3 was
in the works. Did Microsoft forget to test SP3 with a virgin SP2 system, say
even one measly time?

More details on what is happening to me in case anyone from Microsoft is
reading this:

1. I start with a virgin XP Pro SP2 system from a vendor like Panasonic or
Dell.

2. I disable automatic updates during XP GUI setup.

3. After XP setup is complete, I initiate a manual Windows Update,
performing all required installation steps until WU notifys me SP3 is
applicable.

4. I then apply SP3 with the offline installer obtained from Microsoft.

5. I immediately attempt another manual Windows Update. All updates obtained
that way fail to install until Method 1 from KB943144 is applied, at which
point all is well.
