Exactly how are you trying to reinstall it? Please describe the procedure
clearly. When you reinstall Windows XP,. it should format the drive, thus
removing everything on it. If it's asking you to remove anything, it sounds
like you're *not* doing a clean installation.

cant get into
bios to check help

The BIOS? Why should the BIOS be involved? And what do you mean you can't
get into the BIOS? Why not? how have you tried to get into it?

when i put the cd in and in runs the compatibility check it tells me that
microsoft shared fax client must be removed before continuing then it exits
out of the installation somebody told me to check bios to see modem set on
full duplex or something I just cant conquer this hurdle any suggestions?

yeh, i think that was me. I was thinking that disabling anything related to
the modem and disconnecting any fax machines, etc.. would help overcome the
hurdle.

Then I had wondered if you were able to actually get into the windows
desktop without the cd, so that the fax component and or service could be
disabled.....

1. Open up My Computer.
2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
3. Put a check in "Show hidden files and folders".
4. Click on Start, then Run.
5. Type in: CMD.
6. Type in: cd\ , then hit enter
7. Type in: dir fxsclnt.exe /s
8. Remember what directory you found the file in.
9. Type in Exit.
10. Double click on My Computer.
11. Right-click on the C: drive and click on Explorer.
12. Find the directory that housed the fxsclnt.exe.
13. Delete the file and restart your computer.

Now, you should be able to upgrade to Windows XP.

The only reason you may need to go into the BIOS is to set the BIOS boot
order for CD first. Refer to the other message I sent on another thread
about how to get into the BIOS.

You don't need to run any compatibility check if you're doing a
reinstallation. You already know it's compatible if it's been previously
installed.

If you want to do a clean installation of Windows, just boot from the
Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this)
and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the existing
partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Be aware that reinstalling cleanly wipes out everything on the drive, so be
sure you first have a backup of anything you need to keep. You will also
have to reinstall all your software programs, so make sure you have all the
original media
for them.
