Microsoft Releases First IE7 Update

Microsoft released first update for IE7 (not for Windows Vista). This update
resolves a performance issue with the Phishing Filter. When visiting certain
web pages, the Phishing Filter may increase CPU usage while evaluating the
page contents and the system may become slow to respond. This problem occurs
on pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations
occur quickly. After you install this item, you may have to restart your
computer.

how do you get the update?

This was a cut and paste from:
http ://bink. nu /Article9059. bink

Please notice that I broke the link as I'm not sure I can trust this site,
but there is a download link there. Personally, I'd wait for Microsoft to
publish the update.

The update is available at microsoft.

Note:
-->"This download is available to customers running genuine Microsoft
Windows. Please click the Continue button to begin Windows validation." <--

also:

"Windows Vista users must pass Microsoft Genuine validation requirements to
enable certain product features and to obtain non-security updates and
product support from Microsoft"

So I don't know if/when it will come thru WU.

For those running IE7, the patch *is* available via WU/MU, I believe.
The URL that Tim posted, above, is the correct URL.

Apply if running IE7 - only...

Just downloaded/installed it...no problems here. But interestingly it does
not show up in the Dowload History.

I found out about this IE7 update from the Calendar of Updates and then
confirmed via Spyware Sucks. I could NOT find it at MU, and even though I
installed it, it does NOT show up in my update history.

Of course IE7 is there, but this update for the phishing filter is NOT on WU
or MU and is not listed on my update history. Why not??? Shouldn't it go
out to ALL who are using IE7 with XP, without them having to find out about
it from a 3rd party??? Shouldn't it come via Automatic Updates??? My did
not. If I am unusual, I need to know how to solve that problem.

Something almost equally strange to me is that there is almost no mention of
this new update on the IE7 NG. I found 1 thrread with 1 post by a user who
does not even have IE7 installed. Shouldn't this update be announced more
widely?

I also don't see anything about it on the IE7 Blog.

I am not sure why the phishing filter fix is /not/ on WU, sorry.

Hi Randy,

My guess as to why it's not on WU is because it's not meant for everyone.
It's a hotfix for people you are experiencing abnormal CPU usage while
viewing certain sites with multiple frames with the phishing filter
activated. Not everyone is experiencing this anomaly, this hotfix is for a
subset of folks who are experiencing this.

Thanks, Randy. I hope you pass along my concern. I imagine that only a
minority of users are even aware of this update.

This "subset" seems to include potentially anone who is not using VIsta.
Those usual words "only apply this hotfix if" are not to be seen in the KB
about this update.
Plus, I wonder how the "subset" are supposed to be informed about the update?

Noted, Paul - I *will* pass this along to the IE Team.
