I receive a message saying "are you sure you want to permanantly delete all
the items and subfolders in the deleted items folder" when I close Outlook.
How do I get rid of this?

Change your Options for empying the deleted items folder when closing down.
Do it manually instead. You can uncheck "warn when emptying..." in tools,
options, Other, Advanced options.

You don't mention your outlook version!! In 2007 it is tools options other…uncheck box for empty deleted items folder on exit.

Sorry, it's version 2003. and I do not see that checkbox! I went to
tools/internet options/advanced and do not see that line listed.

Of course you don't see it on that menu. That's an Internet Explorer menu,
not an Outlook menu. Look in Outlook, not IE.

Ok, in Outlook, I can go to tools/options and then there isn't anything that
says other or advanced options! Now what??

Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options, just like Mary said.

I can access tools and options but then there isn't a "other" or "advanced
options". The tabs under options are:
general/read/receipts/send/compose/signatures/spelling/security/connection/maintenence. Nothing in any of these tabs will give me the uncheck box I need.

You're still not looking in Outlook. You're looking in Outlook EXPRESS,
which isn't the same thing at all.

Ugggggggggg. I just am not following! How do I access just "Outlook"? I tried
Outlook Express, thats not correct. I orginally tried Microsoft Outlook,
that's not correct. So now I tried Microsoft Outlook again and unchecked
"Warn before permanently deleting items". After clicking ok, it deleted all
in my deleted items folder! I then had to do a "rollback" to this am to get
them back. I want to delete the message, but not delete my items in my
deleted folder. Oh boy

That's like not emptying your trash can in case you throw something in it
you want to keep. Why keep messages in your "Deleted Items" folder in the
first place? Either you want to keep them, in which case move them to a
folder you have created, or if not, allow Outlook to get rid of them!

Items in the Deleted Items folder are SUPPOSED to be deleted. Why would you
put them there otherwise?

Checking (or unchecking) the "Warn before permanently deleting items" option
will NOT delete anything. Ever. All it will do is stop warning you when
YOU permanently delete something, which you are doing when you close Outlook
because you have the "Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting" option
enabled on Tools>Options>Other. Emptying the Deleted Items is a permanent
delete and you'll be warned when you close Outlook is you have the warning
option enabled.

Either don't empty the Deleted Items folder when you close Outlook or don't
store things you want to keep in Deleted Items.
