"microsoft office outlook is synchronizing folders" question?

Since installing Office 2003, everytime I open up outlook it tells me that
"microsoft office outlook is synchronizing folders"
This causes hanging on my entire system until it has completed.
I am not on an exchange server. I am on a wireless network at home but we
are not sharing anything other than a wireless broadband ISP connection.
I have tried researching this issue and cannot find resolution.
Why and what is outlook synchronizing? How can I stop this?

I have the exact same issue. It also will hang me while trying to type
an email message. I am 5 words ahead and then look at the screen and
realize Outlook has not shown them as it is synchronizing folders.

A computer savy person told me that it happens when you have a Palm or
Pocket PC set up to sync with Outlook (I have a Palm).

Unfortunately, I have not found a solution.
