I have someone who is getting this message every time she tries to open a
..TIF file from her email.

microsoft office document imaging has encountered a problem and needs to
close - getting this error each time she tries to open a .TIF from email
attachment.

Had her save the file to her hard drive and then open Microsoft Office
Document Imaging from the Start Menu. Immediately received the same error
message. Did a detect and repair from word but still get this error.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

While this question has nothing to do with Word, there are many flavours of
TIF file and it could simply be that she has found some incompatible ones.
Insetad of opening it from the e-mail attachment (never a good idea) she
should save the file to her hard drive, then using Windows Explorer right
click the file > open with > choose program and select Windows Picture and
Fax viewer. Check the box to always open with this program.

The problem is described in KB912022. Microsoft has a hotfix for the problem
but has not released it yet. Microsoft offers the Hotfixe on a no-charge
basis but the only way to get it is to pay U$35.00 to a Microsoft Support
Professional on a Pay-Per-Incident basis to resolve this issue. You may
contact them at: (800)-936-5700, Monday to Friday, 5:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Pacific Time and Saturday to Sunday, 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

You just have to deal with or pay the U$35.00 as Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 912022 states that there is a "post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service
Pack 2 hotfix". The supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it
is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next
Microsoft Office 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix."

If it is determined that you need the hotfix, and you do not ask any other
support questions, you will NOT be charged for the service call.
