Is this update necessary? This update has appeared in the past, but I never
installed it because someone said this could mess up the computer. I chose
to hide this update.

This update would only appear if you have the .NET Framework version 1.1
installed. You should install the update. It could not "mess up" your
system. I suppose there is a very (VERY) remote chance it may cause a
problem with an application that uses the .NET Framework, but that is highly
unlikely.

If you have .NET framework already installed then the update is necessary.
If you don't then just ignore it as you have done in the past.
I have to admit i haven't had any trouble with the update.

The idea of an update being necessary should already be clear - MS and
other vendors don't produce updates for the fun of it, they do it to fix
a problem or to provide additional functionality, but mostly to fix a
problem.

If you are worried about the system after you install the update, then
you really need to worry about your backup methods and your disaster
recovery planning - you do have a good backup? You do have a disaster
recovery plan?

In general, if the Windows update site tells you that you have an
update, in most cases you should install the update. As with everything,
there is no way for any of us here to actually know if you "need" the
update and if it has anything to do with your setup - other than you are
provided the update.

Install the update after you ensure the last backup was good and see
what happens.
