Does anyone happen to know if it's possible to get an
*evaluation* copy of Windows Longhorn ?

Sort of like when we were able to sign up & get a copy of
Windows XP (RC1) before the main release was available.

Any info on this is greatly appriciated..:+)

Release (I read) is scheduled for 2006. This is 2003, check back in 3 years.

We are a long way from having a public preview/evaluation program for
Windows "Longhorn"
You will see announcements closer to the time

Regarding Longhorn Build 4051 ...
The 7000 PDC 2003 attendees will receive Longhorn build 4051 on Monday,
so I'll provide screen-shot galleries and a full review as soon as possible.
But don't worry about pirating the build. Microsoft will make it available
online to one and all in November for a small fee, I'm told, and ship it to
Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Universal customers in December. Hundreds
of thousands of copies of this important pre-Beta 1 release will be floating
around, and Microsoft wants your feedback, which will dictate the timeline
for Beta 1 (due vaguely in the first half of 2004), the features that will
change by the final release and, ultimately, when the final release occurs.
According to my sources, the oft-delayed PDC build (it was originally due in
early October but was held up because of a weird CD-ROM-drive
incompatibility problem) is rock solid and quite usable, unlike the other
alpha builds we've seen. And, as first reported in WinInfo Daily UPDATE, no,
it doesn't include the Aero UI that the final Longhorn version will use.

Nice to know, I slipstreamed a copy back in June it was
too buggy to be any fun to try. Nice new interface though.

I am well aware of the PDC build.
That is not however a public Beta or Evaluation copy.
It is a developer pre Beta release. Designed to allow developers early
access to certain functionality and APIs.
Hence the reason it is being made available to PDC attendees and MSDN
subscribers.

I cannot comment on Paul's other statement about it being made generally
available.

Send an E-mail to (e-mail address removed) and hope they select you for
beta testing when that phase starts.

Beta one of Windows Code Name: Longhorn will not be out until Summer 2004,
just FYI.

I just did a fresh install of Windows Longhorn (obtained at the PDC)
and am noting some unusual behavior: The CPU utilization is clipped
at 100%, but the process manager shows only 11 processes (all look
like normal Windows things)--all with 0% CPU. So what's the mystery
process that's eating CPU? I installed on a P4 2.2ghz box with 256meg
of RAM (it's also paging like crazy, though adding memory might help
this out.)

Also--where might a person find video drivers for this OS? I'm not
seeing any of the whiz-bang GUI effects that were demoed at the PDC, I
was thinking it's the video card driver, which only comes up as
"Standard VGA". I have an NVidia Vanta in this box. (Or maybe the
neat GUI stuff isn't included in this PDC version?)

Thanks

Some of the UI technologies that you saw demoed at the PDC are not
implemented in the PDC build.
