I recently upgraded from Win 98 to XP & found that there
are a reduced number of fonts in the directory than there
were in W98. Can I recover those fonts & from where?

I know this doesn't answer your question, but you can download free fonts at
these sites. Some are what you are looking for.

The only fonts that are over written by the upgrade are those with the
same name. You should still have the fonts you installed to 98
located in c:\windows\fonts. If they were deleted by the upgrade,
they're gone. Did you make a backup of 98 before you upgraded?

A lot of those TTFs were probably installed by other progs you
installed under win98. You could get them back by installing programs
(I believe for example that adding the Office suite adds fonts, and
believe that if you have the version with Publisher, then there are
even more fonts installed).

Since adding fonts is easy, you actually could copy the font files
from any version of Windows on another computer. Put them on a floppy
or CD then use the add font utility to install them on the XP system.
