microsoft e-mail (highlighting W/O opening)

How do you highlight e-mails (for deleting) without opening them? I highlight
one and then it opens, I don't want it to, then when I hold down SHIFT and
the arrow key it opens every one of them. I jist want to get rid of all this
junk.

View>Layout>disable Preview Pane>apply/OK
Put the Preview Button on the top Toolbar, switch back and forth as is your
want?
View>Layout>Customise Toolbar.
