Microsoft delays SP2 auto update

Microsoft is delaying distribution of Windows XP Service Pack 2 via its
Automatic Update service by at least nine days in order to give corporate
customers more time to temporarily block automatic downloading of SP2 by
their employees.

The software maker notified customers of the decision in an e-mail on
Monday, when it had planned to make SP2 available through automatic
distribution. Microsoft said many big companies aren't ready to make the
move and need more time to put in place tools to block automatic updates to
SP2 until they can fully test their internal applications.

SP2 now won't be available on Automatic Update for users of Windows XP
Professional Edition until Aug. 25 at the earliest, according to the e-mail,
which was posted to a number of enthusiast Web sites, including one run by
Steven Bink, a software developer based in Amsterdam

Does anyone know whether it will automatically install or just automatically
download?

If you have Automatic Updates set to install at a certain time, it
should start the process, but probably won't get very far because I believe
you have to read and agree to a EULA document beforehand.

Just to add to this post, XP Home users will start getting SP2 via
Automatic Updates beginning Wednesday August 18. Unless Microsoft delays it
again.

Hi

Automatic Updates can be configured for either setting:

Right click on My Computer, select Properties then the Automatic Updates
tab.

I have it set to automatically download AND install but have noticed that
sometimes the updates only download and notify that they are ready to be
installed. I'm assuming that a patch with big will do the same thing and
not install automatically.

Depends on your automatic updates settings
