The October 2003 security patch for Internet Explorer
(828750)will not install on my computer. After I
downloaded the patch an alert box appears and tells me I
need to have Internet Explorer 6.0 installed. Internet
Explorer 6.0 sp1 is already on the computer. Please
advise.

Hi David,

I advise you not to install it. Actually, you already have, it's a virus
posing as a security update. The error message at the end is there to throw
you off the track. Now you have your work cut out for you.

Swen worm, see:

http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=helpCenter&hcName=swen
http://www.viruslist.com/eng/viruslist.html?id=88029

Clue: Microsoft does not distribute updates or patches via e-mail. You
likely recently received and installed one of these faked support emails.

The October 2003(828750) that he mentions is on Windows Update - I think you
might be referring to the September 2003 security update sent out supposedly
by e-mail from Microsoft.

Try the direct download for IE6 SP1

Hi David
I don't know if this will help but here goes.
The one time that I had a problem downloading and update
from ms I had to delete the "catroot2" (catalog) folder.
start-explore-windows-system32-catroor2-delete
This folder will be in your recycle bin so don't worry.
It should be about 4 to 5 megabytes in size if yours is
larger it is corrupted, Windows will also "recreate" this
folder when its needed and missing. I don't know if this
is your problem or not but its worth a try.
If you feel strange about deleting this folder (as I did)
this info is also in the ms knowledge base, search for
something like unable to download updates sorry I don't
know the bulletin # Mike

Ahh,

I tried to validate that number, but couldn't find it. I hadn't checked the
latest security releases this week, so I missed it. I (wrongly) assumed
therefore that it was one of the many permutations of the swen bug.

Thanks for catching it.

You got the one for IE 6 in windows XP - at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/828750/download.asp
choose the top one, for IE6 SP1. The matter is anything but clear

There is an October one on the Microsoft site - and it covers some
pretty important matters. The one you refer to is the one in an
apparently plausible e-mail.

Get the proper one at
