Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP

Terry

Some time ago in Add/Remove Programs, I discovered an item listed as
"Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP." Since then,
I've wondered occasionally how did it get there, where did it come from
and what does it do? It appears to have been added on December 13,
2006, and last used on January 12, 2007. That information came from an
uninstall utility called UnClean (v2.0) which I've used for several
years. UnClean also indicates an error message which is not visible in
ARP.

I searched on the title and found
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927374/ja, which says that the MS
Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP contains the "msdelta.dll"
file and that said file is part of the WinVista O/S. So -- why is it on
my computer? I'm using WinXP.

One of the first links contained in KB927374 is
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Bb267312.aspx which is entitled
"Delta Compression Application Programming Interfaces" and from which I
learned absolutely nothing. It may be relevant, but I didn't understand
anything it said.

I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I'd sure
appreciate any information anybody cares to pass along on this subject.

Thanks.

Based on this blurb from the KB article it's an "upgrade"

"MSDelta is the next generation of the PatchAPI compression technology
that was included in earlier version of the Windows operating system.
MSDelta typically produces smaller deltas than PatchAPI."

I made the original post about a week ago and got no response. Maybe I
didn't make myself clear or maybe I was just too wordy. Let me try
again, more to the point.

I'd like to know what is "Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for
Windows XP" but what I'd **really** like to know is what happens if I
delete it? I have no clue what it is, what it does, or where it came
from.

Thank you.

You did get a response. You asked 5 days ago, you received a response
within 24 hours (almost within 12 hours.)
See your other response...

Also - know this is a volunteer based newsgroup. Just because you ask does
not mean you will get an answer.

Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 is an optional component on Windows
XP. One of the elements it installs (msdelta.dll) is part of Windows Vista,
used by Windows Update on that platform. However, the functions provided by
that DLL can be also used by other programs on other versions of Windows
(Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, specifically). Therefore, this
component may have been installed as a part of some other program on your
system. So you probably don't want to remove that component, as doing so
would be likely to "break" whatever program(s) on your system that use it.

Thank you for answering my questions.

I admit to being a little confused -- why did the response you referred
to not show up in this NG? I read the posts here pretty regularly,
using Outlook Express. I didn't even know this NG existed in Google.
I'm not surprised, but until now I didn't know it. I'd be interested to
know how to get from OLExp to Google Groups or how an answer could show
up in one place but not another. I'm familiar with cross-posting, but
that doesn't appear to apply in this case. . . . ? It could be that a
question I asked some months ago and got no answer could in fact have
been answered in the Google groups. Any info you care to share will be
welcome.

Yes, I know the group is staffed by volunteers, and I realize that not
all questions will have answers. It just didn't occur to me that this
would be one of them. That's one reason I waited nearly a week before
trying a second time.

Again, thanks very much for the information.

As always MVP's talking BS, no, it is not installed on XP by a 3rd
party program, it gets installed automatically with Windows update,
and yes, as so many M$ rubbish, it is not required and can be
removed without harm.

I do believe you have misunderstood what was written, not to mention - did
so over one and a half years *after* the fact. I have quoted the thread in
its entirety above - for clarity - and the entire conversation can be found
here:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/browse_frm/thread/c017d0c3327c31a/

I did not mention third party software, I stated that it was an optional
component on Windows XP and may have been installed by some other program on
their system (albeit likely a Microsoft program - thus the lack of any
'third party' wording.) If it was installed with some other program - that
other program likely installed it on purpose and removal may break that
intended purpose.

It also seems to be included with some patches surrounding Windows Media
Player (or, as known earlier in this conversation, "some other program".)

Since the original post/query was made - Service Pack 3 for Windows XP was
released. The official list of included fixes included in Service Pack 3
for Windows XP does *not* show this to be a part of the service pack;
however - another (unofficial) list does.

Official list:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480/

Unofficial list:
http://www.digitalsupporttech.com/m...are_included_in_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3.htm

I'd trust the official list, however - having said that, it could be buried
in another way in the official list (re: KB927374).

For further factual information and some opinions on the subject:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uni...mpression-Client-Pack-1.0-for-Windows-XP.html
http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-xp/49373-compression-client-pack.html

Hope that helps clarify things in this dated (1 year, 6 months, 12 days old
from the starting date) conversation.

Wow guys, can we be a little less literal here? Obviously he wants
someone to explain what the hell all that technical mumbo jumbo means.
We aren't all technical savy here you know?

Perhaps an example of a program that uses it or a better definition for
the normal user from one of you techies would be more than what he is
asking for.

Here is another article that explains delta compression.
The main value of this article, is the section at the top.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb417345.aspx

It is a way of sending a change to a file, without having
to send the whole file. For it to work, both parties have
to agree that the copy of the file they currently have,
is the same. Otherwise, such a delta scheme could never work.

*******

Years ago, there was a similar concept used for text files.
This illustrates the concept a little bit. The article claims
this method was invented almost 30 years ago.
