According to an article on News.com, Microsoft is in the process of implementing some new configuration changes to the XBox which will make it impossible to use current mod chips and other hacks.
This is done by changing the BIOS used, as well as the physical configuration of the motherboard. Other changes include the removal of the fan used to cool the custom nVidia graphics chipset.
I suppose this will slow down efforts to fully port Linux to XBox. Since you need a mod chip to run it currently, new models will not work, and we will have to wait for a new mod chip design to emerge.
