Microsoft Backup

I am trying to use Microsoft's "Backup Utility" included in WinXP Pro
to backup selected files and folders.

For my first backup - I chose "Normal" as the backup type - which is
the same as full backup of the files and folders I

selected for backup.

It actually took me some time to go through the list of files/folders
on my 2 hard-drives to decide which files and folders I

needed to backup.

Now I want to do a "Differential Backup" - ie to back up files which
have changed or have been added since the first "Normal"

backup above.

In the options, I can select "Differential" as the backup type - but in
the backup window - I still have to "Click to select

the check box for any drive, folder or file that you want to back up."

Shouldn't the files / folders I have already backed up in my first
backup be pre-selected? so that I don't have to go through

the whole list again?

Because if I have to choose the files / folders over and over again
everytime I want to do a backup (whether Normal/Full, or

Differential) - the program would seem rather useless?

Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any help.

First, when starting the backup program you will want to remove the check
that starts the program in wizard (stupid) mode. Then immediately shut down
the program. Now, restart the program. Click on the "Backup" tab near the
top of the window.

Choose what you want to backup. Then, before you start the backup, go to
Job/Save Selection As. This will create a backup script of what you plan to
do. Give your backup job a name (be creative here!). Now you can start the
backup.

The next time you want to backup your files, go to Job/Load Selections.
Choose the selection that you previously saved. The same folders/files will
be checked for "this" backup also.

Great - thanks a million for your clear and precise answer!!!

So the Microsoft Backup Utility does do what I need! :)

You have just saved me from many more hours searching for other backup
programs, as well as some $$ , just to do what "Backup Utility"
already does.
