Microsoft AntiSpyWare

Grateful for any assessment of the new Microsoft AntiSpyware recently
released in Beta - In particular, how effective is it?

I'v just installed and tried it out and it appears run smooth and
efficiently - its simple to use and can work away in the background. It is
very similar in style to Sophos AV software

I have been using it for a while and it scan quickly and, I assume,
effectively. It has not found any spyware on my main PC but that's
probably because there isn't any to find.

The program is not a beta program release. It was a program which Microsoft
got from the Giant Company when they bought the Giant Company which also had
Spam Inspector. Microsoft has chosen to call it a beta program, after
notifying us who had Giant Company programs that our subscriptions had or
were about to expire. AntiSpyware has not been a beta program with Giant for
sometime. I guess Microsoft has some Microsoft plan in mind such as forcing
us to buy a new program instead of renewing the update service that Giant
had.

I just installed it a few days ago but I'm impressed already. Very
slick interface, and it seems effective. I updated and ran Ad-Aware
and Spybot Search and Destroy until they verified I had a clean
system. I then installed and ran MS AntiSpyware. It found Trojan
Downloader (XferPro) and one adware item (SearchSquire) in my
registry. It quarantined the former and deleted the latter. Not sure
if these are false positives.

I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 Personal, which updates automatically
several times a day. I also run SpywareBlaster.

Is this the program you are talking about ?

It's not necessarily quite the same as it was when Giant had it, though.

When it was Giant's, did it detect a file with 128k of 0s in it as a
threat? Did it detect part of the Win98 Active Scripting setup as a
threat, and delete it? Because it does now!

Yes.Look at the reviews of anti spyware programs around before Microsoft put
its "beta" version out. The program has kept the appearances and features of
the Giant program. Giant AntiSpyware was rated one of the top three before
Microsoft bought it.

I downloaded the program and went to install it as a trial. It demanded that
I install Internet Explorer version 6 as a prerequisite. No sir, Mr. Gates,
not on MY system.

How do you expect it to remove spyware if you don't first have the
spyware magnet installed? ;)
Bug zappers don't work as well without the UV lights...

I have installed MS AntiSpyware recently and I am quite satisfied
with it. On its first run, it detected 3 kinds of spyware which
Ad-Aware SE and Spybot had not found; unfortunately, I did not
write down their names, and they might of course have been "semi-
false" alarms. My AV is NOD32.

I am using Mozilla Firefox as default browser and I was not
requested to hang on to IE, which I still keep.

I do wonder what/if I have to pay when my free copy of the MS
AntiSpyware expires in about 6 months.

A P.S. OTH, I just saw this on alt.2600:

Watch out when updating your system! ;)"

Jerry,

Be careful. Although this product was purchased from Giant, it has been
modified by Microsoft; hence, the Beta designation.

From what I can tell, it looks promising. However, there are some false
positives and other problems related to the Windows Firewall.

As with any beta version, be careful...don't install unless you're prepared
to do some troubleshooting (and in some cases, reformatting your HDD).

Sunny,

As of today, it is not available on Windows Update. It is still a beta per
the Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

I've heard a tentative release date of 2Q05. Hopefully, they'll work out
the bugs by then.

Juan
| It's no longer Beta. Now offered as a priority on Windows update.

MS AntiSpyware doesn't show up when I visit Windows Update, either as a
priority or an optional component. I'm using XP SP2.
