Microphone Trouble

Hi all.
Having trouble with mic in windows.
And no, its not a settings problem, and yes it is an XP problem.

What im getting is good sound feedback through the speakers or headphones,
when mic is 'un-muted'. But when I play back a recorded sound, or listen to
how the sound is outbut from voice over IP, i get a very feint distorted
sound, which huge background noise. And yes, the +20db boost is switched on.
In fact tried it in both on an off positions. When boost is off i get
absolutely nothing.

Why do I think its windows?
Well, problem arose when i upgraded from win98. Was using an onboard Ac97
sound chip(?), and worked fine in 98. So i thought it was the onboard sound
card, and I disabled this from the mb bios, uninstalled the software, then
stuck in a SB Audigy card, and installed the software. Everything else
works fine, but the Mic still is unusable. And i've tried a couple of mics,
and these all work in another machine/s. And anyway the mic is picking up
sound fine, other wise I would not be hearing it.

What gives?

My hardware is pretty up-to-date, with an IC7MB, plenty of ram, and a 3.0gig
P4. Ive also installed SP2 for XP, but this made no difference. Its like XP
is using incorrect files, that the sound card drivers cant or are not
removing. I've already gone through the process of restoring any lost or
corrupt XP files some time ago to solve another problem. But this also made
no difference.

Any advice welcome

Have you checked for updated drivers from the manufacturer?
