microphone sound recorder wont' work

I have a new computer (Dell Dimension 8400 with Windows XP media edition
software )and and new headset.(I tried it with another headset as well that I
know for sure works.) I can't get the sound recorder to work ( go to
programs,accessories,entertainment-sound recorder). I have checked all
connections and hardware. Any suggestions please?

I also have this problem and have been unable to fix it. Mine plays sounds
just fine but will not record. Nothing is set to mute and all levels are
set to max. Trying to pry the right info out of the Microshaft site is like
pulling your own teeth.

I had this problem just this week.. bought a new mic.. would not
work.. FINALLY in control panel/speech icon/ at the bottom of the page
that comes up is voice speed.. I clicked on audio output.. and the
next screen was set on PREFERRED AUDIO DEVICE.. I unchecked that and
checked USE THIS AUDIO DEVICE.. and it worked!

BTW.. I too, was trying to use sound recorder.. and this DID fix that
problem.
