Microphone level indicator fluctuates, but no audio can be heard

Have a strange problem in Vista Home Premium that's driving me bonkers, this
is on a new install;

Have a Sirius Satallite Radio dock hooked up to the mic jack. Levels have
all been checked and the level indicator fluctuates as if audio is playing,
but I can't hear it. Changing the mic level changes the level on the
indicator, and turning off the radio causes the level to drop to zero, so it
seems like the input is working. Sound otherwise works fine, from all
applications.

Have also tried connecting via the line in jack, and the front panel mic
jack, same symptoms. Originallyt was using the default Microsoft drivers, so
I verified that my drivers were updated (VIA High Definition Audio), no
change. Also verified that the mic/line in jack used what set to default, no
change. Any ideas what I may be missing? Why does Vista see that an input
signal is there, but I can't hear it?

By the way, everything works on my other Windows XP box.

Thanks!!

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you checked that the microphone isn't muted on your audio control
pannel anywhere? If you see movement in levels Windows seems to be
internally processing the signal, just that it isn't getting out.

As nuts as it sounds I had a similar problem when upgrading. I did a
install in place, so all the same hardware and I didn't touch and of
my speaker or mic connections. I didn't hear any audio until I started
pulling plugs and switching them around. What had worked fine no
longer worked till I did. Odd.

I am experiencing the same problem, no mic volume when using Skype. Vista
Business Edition

I have troubleshooted this issue up and down and all around, and it
seems to me at this point to be a bug in Vista. Changing sound cards or
drivers or whatever has done nothing to improve the situation for me.
The most telling thing is that I have no problem at all with mic volume
using Skype while running XP on this very same system.

And it is not strictly a Skype issue, either, as I have the same mic
problem when using Vista's "Sound Recorder" and others have reported the
problem using their mics with other apps.

This problem has been reported by posters using different mobos (both
Asus and Intel), so it can't have anything to do with the chipset. And
it has been reported by posters using different versions of Vista, so
it's not specific to a certain version.

What I don't understand is why so *few* Vista users seem to be
complaining of this mic issue. Apparently, it is only affecting a few of
us, yet I fail to see what unusual thing we might have in common in
addition to the fact we're running Vista.

I keep wondering if Microsoft knows anything about this . . .

I'm having issues with all sound input devices. I first tried to plug
my minidisc player into the line-in port so I could listen to my
tunes. This didn't work, so I tried plugging into the rear
microphone, same problem, then the front mic jack. At least the
monitor registered a volume level, however still no sound. I tested
my connection cable, so I know it isn't the problem.

Any ideas?

A lady I know uses Skype on a laptop with Vista Home Premium and when
she calls me with it, it sounds like she is screeching. I have tried
adjusting her microphone levels but it seems like Vista has a mind of
its own and sets it to whatever it wants. I have ticked off the "do
not adjust levels in Skype and that did not work either. I have not
found a solution yet.

The only application using the microphone is Skype so I find it
strange that the microphone gets adjusted by some other program.
