Microphone connection

After not being able to get my microphone to work,i consulted windows
support,and i was told this:
To test the connection:
Open Speech in Control Panel.
Select the Speech Recognition tab.

However, there is no speech recognition tab.Ive tried the ''test hardware
wizard'',but in the past i have used the ''train microphone'' method and this
has worked flawlessly[i now cannot find the train microphone area, and the
test hardware wizard will not recognise my microphone]

Please help me use my microphone, and thank you very much in advance for your
help

[my mic is not muted and is plugged into the right socket]

You do not have it "muted" but do you have it "selected" in the
recording pane?

computer is pretty new,so i doubt i have a faulty sound card.if i download MS
Mary and MS Mike from MS's web site, what will i achieve??

but if there's a way of muting it on the computer then that may be the
problem

Go to control panel and select sounds. In the volume tab select Advanced.
In the Options select prosperities. Make sure there is a check in
microphone. Under the microphone in the play control make sure the mute is
not checked.

You can test your mike with the sound recorder that comes with Windows.
Start-Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-Sound Recorder
