Microphone automatically mutes itself

My microphone is automatically muting itself in the sound control panel and
selecting mic 2 in the advanced tab. Any help on stopping this annoying
habit.

Windows XP Home service pack 2
 
R.click the speaker by the clock,select open volume
control,options,properties,
select record,chk the box for the mic.
 
Thank you for your post...BUT...I have already tried this and when
researching on the internet all I find are Skype related problems but many
people are experiencing this.

Someone Please Help!!!!
 
i also have this problem when trying to use msn and skype haveing the tick
in the mic box does not stop the mic from muteing.. also I find skype shuts
off continually and i cannot find out why
