Microcode Update Device

Hello. I am really having a big problem with the Microcode Update Device in
Device Manager under System Devices. The Microcode Update Device I noticed
had an "!" next to it. The Device status read "Windows cannot load the
device driver for this hardware. The diver may be corrupted or missing.
(Code 39). Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device"

Now under "Driver" tab, the date of the driver looks like 7/1/2001 and the
version reads 5.1.2600.0 HOWEVER when I look in the C:/WINNT/system32/drivers
directory, the only MUP.SYS file in there reads 9/13/2002 5.1.2600.1106! So
what do I do here? why does the properties for the Microcode Update Device
read one thing while the mup.sys file is another? I tried to run the Update
Driver, but there was an error looking for an INF file?? PLEASE can someone
tell me what to do? In order for the error to stop popping up I uninstalled
the Microcode Update Device from Device Manager (created a system Restore
point before I did that though..). I just want to update the darn thing to
get rid of the error code above in the device status. Any suggestions would
GREATLY help.

Regards,

MJ

No I haven't, but it is interesting! However my next question is what
happens now that I performed the uninstall of the Microcode Update Device?
How can I re-install it? Like I mentioned I still have the mup.sys file in
the directory below - how can I re-install?

Much Thanks!

I have a Gateway 500SE Pentium 4 running XP Pro... I could always do a
system Restore back to before I uninstalled the Microcode Update Device,
however If I can get it to not point to the old mup.sys version and look at
the more recent version (which again is in the winnt/system32/drivers
directory) that would be better...

Also another strange thing that has been happening is that for the past 4 or
5 days, there have been sporadic times where my computer freezes up (no error
messages in the Event Viewer) - The screen just sits there, and my mouse is
frozen - I cannot do a ctrl-alt-del or even turn off the power by pushing the
power/reset button. I can only turn off by pulling the power cord (which I
HATE to do - but that is the only alternative). I do not know if this is a
power supply issue (wouldn't the CPU just turn off on it's own rather than
staying up and freeze the screen?), but I just did a mass vacuuming in the
CPU to get all the dust bunnies out of there... Any additional thoughts on
this one?

Much Appreciated,

Michael
