Michael Giorgio - Win2K WINS oddity!

To Michael Giorgio (or any WINS expert) -

In Windows 2000 WINS Manager, when you look at the registrations for each
computer (usually, Workstation 00h, Messenger 03h, and File Server 20h),
what does it mean when you see not one but two little connected computers
icons next to each other to the left of the registration. In my case, those
two little connected computers icons to the left of the File Server 20h
record name. Most of my servers have just the one computer icon, but my
problem servers have the two icons. Very strange.

Open a dos prompt on the problem server and run nbtstat -n
and verify there are no conflicts. If so delete the mapping and
reboot the machine which will cause it to reregister with WINS.
Can you describe the symptoms the problem machines are
having? If you open the system log of the event viewer on a
problem do you see any related events?

BTW the icons to the left of the registration
identify the type of mapping. The "three little
connected computers" signify a multihomed,
group or domain name type mapping. A single
computer signifies a unique name entry.
