messenger

I have a message icon that appears on the system tray every now and then.
On mouse over, it says 1 message. But I can't right click nor normal click.
And it isn't true there's a message. My computer is standalone and my mail
checks show no mail either.

How do I get rid of this annoying icon and prevent it from reappearing?

Thanks.

Your subject is messenger but you talk about mail. Confusing?
If its messenger, then turn it off. Open messenger and go into settings
and disable startup.

Hi Al,

I'm sorry if it sounded confusing.

It's a red colored icon of an envelope in the system tray. Don't know if
its mail or message or whatever.

Anyway, I'll try your recommendations.

Thanks.

Al,

Sorry, but I can't even find messenger. It's not in Start/Programs nor
anywhere else.

Since I don't have it installed, I can't tell you where it is.
Obviously it should be some executable in C:/program files/messenger.
Hopefully someone will come to your rescue.

Thanks Al,

I checked with the add/remove programs in control panel. I don't have
messenger installed either.

What's with this red envelope?

I'd have to see it to understand. Messenger I don't think has a red
envelope.

I thought it was a little man icon. Not an envelope. Right clicking
the icon does nothing for you?

It would be under add windows components. Its not a so called program,
but a component of windows.

Al,

Yes its a red envelope with a little asterik like it was seeking attention.
I was wondering if it was yahoo or hotmail that put it there. I wanted to
do a print screen for you to see but it disappeared. It'll appear again, as
and when it wishes.

Click and right click does nothing, not even a menu. Mouse over produces a
balloon "1 messages".

Grab a shot of it when it next appears :)

Top right hand corner, red envelope.
That's definitely an email of some sort. Never seen it. But remember,
I have successfully removed messenger and even when I had it I never
used it. Hate the product.
Do you have a C:\program files\messenger folder? If so they look for
an EXE in there. msmsgs.exe or messenger.exe Of course we are thinking
this is messenger and it might not be.
Or try this link

You might also right click the start bar on a blank spot, click
properties and then customize. See if you see the icon there? If so
does this customize menu allow you any insight to the properties of the
icon?

Beyond this, I'm sorry, you're on your own.

Big Al,

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

I've taken your advice but it isn't working. Guess I have to live with it
for the time being.

I'll do a new post with the pic and see if anyone recognise it.

Thanks again.
