The Messenger Service is very different from the Windows Messenger [Instant
Messenger]. "Messenger Service" is used for transmitting pop-up messages
over a network/internet.
Installing a firewall application or turning ON the Windows XP Internet
Connection Firewall would solve the vulnerability. [Disabling the messenger
Service is optional]
Here is how to enable the Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP:
1. Open Network Connections
2. Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to
protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this
connection.
3. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select the
Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this
computer from the Internet check box.
This blocks the TCP ports responsible for Messenger data tranmissions and
prevents Pop-ups.
Windows messenger is no more dangerous than any other IM service. If you are
encountering trouble with messenger popups, then enable the native firewall
or install a third party one.
To uninstall messenger, start run the below comman (copy/paste to avoid
