Messenger Service ads

Can ANYONE PLEEEEASE tell me if there is a way to rid
myself of the incessant messenger service popup ads. They
are driving me batty! I realize some of them are from
exactly the people I am trying to keep out of my life,
advertsising their version fo adblocker, but why pay for it
if I don't have to.

I am baffled as to why Microsoft placed code to enable this
crap into their XP version.

NO WONDER SOMEONE OUT THERE HATES THEM WITH SUCH PASSION.
THERE WAS NO NEED I CAN THINK OF OUTSIDE OF MAYBE THEY GET
KICKBACKS ON THESE ADS FOR THIS TO BE PART OF THEIR
PROGRAMMING.

Wrong Newsgroup in the future try microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, but
here's the answer:

You're referring to a networking service called Messenger (not "Instant
Messenger), which is used by administrators to send important information to
client machines on their network. The spammers are simply taking advantage
of this capability.

To Stop the service and disable it, follow these instructions:
- Go to Start | Run,
- enter "services.msc"
- Locate the service name of "Messenger" .
- Double click on it. Click "Stop" and then select "Disabled" in the
"Startup type" drop down list.
- Click OK, and exit the services window.

You will never receive another messenger spam pop up again...not to be
confused with MSN Instant Messenger for chatting with your buddies, that
won't be affected. If this machine is on a workgroup controlled by
administrators you will not be able to receive their messages to you in the
future, so use caution here.

another way to block it without potential OS problems that could be
inadvertantly done with the previous solution, go to www.grc.com and
download/run the "ShootTheMessenger" program.
