How does one remove MS Messinger from a Windows XP system? It is not in the
"add/remove" list. They want to force one to go through all kinds of signup
hassel to find out or not how to keep it from starting at boot up.

You can stop Messenger from starting at start-up in the Messenger settings.

Open Messenger
Click Tools, then Options
Then click Preferences
Then uncheck "Run Windows Messenger when Windows Starts"

Click Start >> Control panel >> Add/Remove programs >> Double click on Add
and remove windows components and you will see Messenger there, please
uncheck the check box for it click [OK] and then close the control panel and
Reboot your machine, does still nag you?.

What sign up services?, is it the normal sign up for MSG or other services?.

Click Start, Run and enter:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Additionally, if you use the Contacts pane in Outlook Express, you will want
to make one change to the system Registry.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Right click in the right pane and select New, Dword value. Give it the name
Hide Messenger Double click this new entry and set the value to 2. This
step is needed to prevent a long delay in opening OE if you use the Contacts
pane.

For an automated method of doing this, see my web site, www.dougknox.com, go
to the Win XP Fixes section and follow the link for Windows Messenger -
Remove

Note, that's for Windows Messenger, not MSN Messenger or Windows Live
Messenger.

Modify C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to remove the word "Hide" from
the pertinent Windows Components entries. Be sure to leave the two
surrounding commas in place. (Iow, change the line
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,hide,7" to read
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7"), and then go to Control
Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. Windows
Messenger will now appear among the list of Windows components that can
be removed.
