messenger locking up system

I try to log into my msn email account and windows live messenger comes up
showing all my contacts,it then procedes to scroll down each name opening up
a separate window.After it has done that the whole system freezes up and I
cannot do anything on the computer.I have tried system restore on various
dates and each time it has failed.I then scanned for viruses and spyware and
it found nothing.I would appreciate any help..many thanks
