Messaging Susbystem Spooler

I have Windows XP Home, and use Office 97. My problem is when I start Outlook, I very quickly ge the error message that there is a problem with the Microsoft Windows Messgaing Subsystem Spooler". The program hangs up, won't download any e-mail, and I have to control-alt-delete to clear the screen. Any ideas about how to solve this probelm?
