Messages stay in Outbox

I use Microsoft Outlook 2003 as my e-mail client, and sbcglobal with a DSL
line as my ISP. Every couple of days an e-mail refuses to leave the Outbox.
There is no connection problem, I'm not working Offline, and there's no error
message. I can see no pattern. It happens with a variety of recipient ISPs.
One example: yesterday an e-mail to a particular recipient wouldn't leave the
Outbox. Today I was able to send an identical e-mail to that recipient, but
the one I created yesterday still won't go. Sometimes a Reply to an e-mail
won't go, but if I send a new e-mail it will go. This doesn't always work. I
have tried changing it to “Not read,â€, and re-opening it and Sending it. I
have all updates to Office and to XP.
Dell said it must be the ISP - Outlook would present an error message if
it were an Outlook problem. SBC says it's Outlook - there's no problem with
my line or the connection. I disabled Norton Personal Firewall - yesterday's
original e-mail still won't go.

As a workaround, try leaving one email in your outbox permanently. Any others
that subsequently go to Outbox should remain italicised and so get sent. My
wife has O/L 2002 and has a similar problem, cured by the above.

Thank you. I'll try it.

I have been having a similar problem and will try your work-around (although
why can't it work as it should?). I have been getting around the problem by
dragging the persistent message from the Outbox to my desktop, double left
clicking on the Desktop shortcut which places a copy of the message back in
the Outbox, italicized and sendable. The original remains. I do note that
while the first message is under a date heading of "none," the copy is under
a heading of "today." (using Outlook 2003). Why?

I discovered that the outbox was not sent when the date field shows NONE.
And it will show none when I use auto-complete tab when entering addressees,
i.e. just type the first few characters e.g."Mic..", then the choice of
Michael, Michelle appears under the scroll bar and I choose one of them.

Work-around by selecting the addressees by clicking on the addressbook.

After 5 months of using Outlook with no problems, I've started experiencing
the same thing. Messages are being put under the heading of "Date: None" and
it's those messages that remain in outbox. It seems to happen mostly, but
not exclusively, with emails I'm trying to reply to.

Noper,

doesn't work for me. I turn auto-complete off and I still get a not sent in
the outbox....turning off Norton AV doesn't work either, and the other
suggestion I've tried after reading a 100 posts is to turn off all plugins.
Noper, doesn't work either. The next popular solution is to select "send
immediately" well it sends but then when you turn it off the problems
remains.

When you turned off Norton, did you do so by uninstalling it, rebooting,
then reinstalling without the mail scanning options. My understanding is
that is what is required to actually get Norton to leave the messages
alone.

I started expeiencing the "Date: none" problem in the Outbox a few weeks ago
(XP Home Edition). Leaving a dummy (i.e., unsendable) message in the Outbox
works MOST of the time, but I've found it to not be a 100% fix. My ISP
suggested disabling Norton Email Scanning, which helped to some extent (I was
also experiencing the problem of Outlook reporting that messages were sent
when the were actually not.) I am surprized that there is not more knowledge
of these problems since they seem to be becoming more widespread. Any
help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

i am using Outlook 2002 and been having the same problems. i used to have
Outlook Express and didnt have this problem before. The only reason i
switched to Outlook 2002 was because it has more features.

If you are working offline, the status bar will display Offline. Look on the
lower right hand side. If it says "Offline" click on the down arrow and
uncheck "Offline."

Howard, I'm having the exact same problem. And, my problem also started a
few weeks ago. I'm running Outlook 2002 SP3 under Windows 2000, SP4. Random
messages stay in the outbox with the date of "None". However, I'm fairly
certain that the messages are being sent; as I get replies from the recipient
when called for. However, this is frustrating, as I have to manually drag
the message to the sent items folder, the date and time is not stamped, and I
have no verification that it was actually sent unless I get a reply. I could
be wrong, but I believe this coincided with an automatic Windows Security
Update from a few weeks ago. I'm also running Trend Micro's PC-Cillin
Internet Security Suite which updates almost daily. It scans outbound
messages for viruses. This is the main way that I know the message is going
out, as there is a balloon that pops up telling me that it is scanning an
outbound message. However, I've seen so many posts around the web from
people with the exact same problem, that this HAS to be a Microsoft problem.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the messages that are stuck
in the outbox. However, once there, you can't do anything to resend them
without moving them to another folder first. In other words, you can't just
open the message and hit send like normal. Also, when you do that, the
message doesn't italcize indicating that it is pending being sent.

check the size of your emails. although my server says i can hold much
larger files, after i reduced my file size below 5mb...my emails and reset my
computer, the emails were sent.

Do you have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP installed on your computer? If you
do go to Security in the control panel, click on Windows Firewall and the
exceptions tab.
Click on Add program and browse for Outlook.exe. Add Outlook as an exception.

Were it endemic, all would have the problem. Since all don't, it can't be
endemic.

My messages stay in my Outbox, but people on my distribution list indicate
they have already received the email- 3-12 times as I try to reopen & send
the email. In several cases, it seems to be tied to a bounced email address-
user has dropped their service, their mailbox is full, they have an out of
the office reply. Maybe it is happening because with DSL, these replies can
be happening from a POP account before the whole list (about 200 names BCC'd)
get their copy. This could also be true because my ISP is across the street
from me- no lag time for Outlook to send & receive.

Some of our users are now experiencing a very similar problem. When offline
the first message sent/in the outbox, will always have a date of 'None, and
not be italic, with the icon, showing it as a draft message.
Any subsequent messages work as per normal
When the user is back online, instead of the outbox synchronising
automatically, the user has to open up the 'stuck' email and press end again,
then synchronise outlook to send the other documents in the outbox.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
