Messages sending but not clearing from Outbox

Hi, I'm a former MS engineer. I have been using Outlook since v1.0, and am
very familiar with it. I've got an unusual problem.

Just today, Outlook stopped clearing messages from the Outbox. The messages
do send, but they don't clear the Outbox. After sending, they appear in
regular text, not italic. I can delete them and move them manually. This even
occurs with a simple one-line "test" message. What gives?

I'm using Outlook 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 box. Windows is up to date
and so is Outlook (SP-3 9.0.0.6627). I have auto-archiving turned on. There
are 16383 messages in the Sent Items folder. My outlook.pst folder is
1,249,264 KB in size. I'm not "working offline." I ran the Inbox repair tool,
and it found and repaired some "minor" inconsistencies, but that didn't solve
the problem. Nor did rebooting. KB 195922 was no help.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I would first try to specify a new delivery location, i.e. a new PST. If
that doesn't solve your issue then recreate your outlook profile.

I think you just hit the maximum number of items in a folder in your Sent
Items folder. Try deleting some or moving some to another folder.

I just tried archiving the Sent Items folder with a more recent date, to make
some space, and got "Error while archiving folder "Sent Items" in store
"Personal Folders"."

What gives? Is there some invisible limit to the size of an archive's Sent
Items as well?

I think I just answered my own question...the number of items in my
archive's Sent Items folder is also 16383. That must be the magic number.
Pretty lame to have an invisible limit that doesn't throw any errors (in the
main .pst), or errors a normal user would understand (in the archive .pst),
don'tcha think? Grr. Well I guess I will have to archive the archive. Bleh.

Thanks for the clue though!

Follow-up: archiving the Sent Items folder from my archive.pst to a new
archive file, then archiving the Sent Items from my outlook.past to
archive.pst, cleared up the trouble. I was up against the limit of the Sent
Items folder. I have some choice words for the Word team on this little
bugaboo. But thanks, Jeff, for your help! You nailed it.
